What You Need to Get Started
Before we get into the nitty-gritty of how to magic loop, let's make sure your knitting bag is packed with the right tools:
-
Your Yarn: Anything your heart desires!
-
A Long Circular Needle: Youโll need a circular needle with a very long, highly flexible cable. We usually recommend a cable that is at least 32 inches (80 cm) or 40 inches (100 cm) long.
Magic Loop: How to
- Cast on the required number of stitches. Make sure to use a circular needle with a long wire.
- Push all the stitches into the middle of the wire and split them into two groups containing roughly the same number of stitches.
- Now, take one group of stitches and move them toward the tip of the left needle while leaving the second group of stitches in the middle of the wire.
- Now work the stitches from the left needle onto your right needle.
- Move the remaining unworked stitches to the left needle by pushing the stitches up the wire toward the tip.
- Move the stitches from the right needle down the wire (the ones you just worked) and move the unworked stitches onto the left needle (you need to work these now).
- Work the stitches on the left needle again.ย
-
Repeat this process until you have the required number of stitches.

Sound difficult? Watch the video above, where we illustrate the Magic Loop Technique. And remember, practice makes perfect <3
Important! When using the Magic Loop technique, your stitches may twist a little at the beginning, so itโs a good idea to keep an eye on your stitches and make sure that theyโre all facing the right way.
Avoid "ladders" (those loose, stretched-out stitches that can happen where the two halves meet). Give the second stitch of each new needle a firm but gentle tug. This keeps the tension nice and tight!
So, what are you waiting for? Grab a long circular needle and give it a try. You might just pack away your DPNs for good! Happy knitting! โจ
