Say Hello to Edwin, the Maker Behind the Hook

Hi Edwin! Tell us a little about yourself and how Unravel & came to life

โ€œIโ€™m a crocheter from Singapore. I got into crocheting to surprise the woman I was chasing โ€“ sheโ€™s my fiancรฉe now โ€“ as sheโ€™s been crocheting since the age of 9.

Since then, Iโ€™ve realized how calming it is, how I seem to have a knack for it, and how Iโ€™m able to express myself through it. Crocheting also took me out of a dark place in life, and itโ€™s become something deeply meaningful to me. We both started selling small pieces. I created headwear and my partner created bags.

The pivotal moment came when I realized there werenโ€™t a lot of menโ€™s garment patterns available online, and that sparked me to create my own shirt designs. The first shirt I designed is still my best seller. This brand wouldnโ€™t be around without the support from the crochet community โ€“ theyโ€™re the ones keeping it alive.

Soon, weโ€™ll be expanding, and there will be a change to Unravel &. Weโ€™ll be rebranding into something more inclusive and exciting!โ€

Whatโ€™s the story behind your Insta handle, @edwininja? (We had to ask!)

โ€œI started Instagram when I was a kid, so the name has been stuck with me, just like an embarrassing first email address.โ€

What keeps you coming back to crochet?

โ€œI believe all crafters can relate to the flow state that crochet puts us in. It has become my livelihood! Coming from an acting background, I used to enjoy acting a lot because it was therapeutic. But now Iโ€™ve found something thatโ€™s even more so.โ€

In your opinion, what tiny design detail can make or break a crochet garment?

โ€œThe smallest detail isnโ€™t even about the crochet โ€“ itโ€™s the buttons! Itโ€™s such a small but very important detail. If paired badly, itโ€™s something that will stand out immediately.โ€

What do you aim for when designing in terms of challenge or technique?

โ€œI feel with each piece I make, Iโ€™m always trying to see how I can level up. I want to create pieces that are challenging, thought-provoking, and emotionally engaging. I hope my pieces are fun to make!โ€

Any quirky crochet habit you canโ€™t quit?

โ€œA secret between us, I tend to snap the yarn instead of using scissors.โ€

Stylish Stitches for Sunshine and Summer

Your mini collection feels like pure sunshine. Where did the idea start?

โ€œI wanted to create something that screams summer and is a little fun to make. The journey is just as important to me as the end product. So the first shirt is in bright yellow, peppered with tiny flowers. The second shirt is something that aligns with me more โ€“ I love monochromatic things, and it is my first time using a gradient yarn!

I start my design process by exploring shapes, then move on to the concept, create a mockup in Canva, and go through lots of trial and error.โ€

If this collection had its own playlist, which song is on repeat?

โ€œSweet Disposition!โ€

Warm-weather crochet can be tricky. How did you balance breezy comfort with style?

โ€œThe most important factor is material. Sticking with plant fibers is always a good rule to follow. Most of them are more breathable.โ€

Tell us how the bright-yellow mesh shirt with tiny flowers took shape.

โ€œI knew I needed to make it unique somehow, and since I was only using one color, I decided to make it stand out through texture. Not only is it fun to crochet โ€“ with three parts to completing each flower โ€“ but it also keeps the crocheter on their toes and helps them stay engaged. And, nothing screams summer more than yellow flowers!โ€

Psst! These shirts? Totally unisex.

Why add a raffia bucket hat to the mix?

โ€œIโ€™ve only ever created one bucket hat with raffia. I knew the texture would be light and airy. The nature of raffia makes the brim stiff, providing good shade for summer.โ€

Any advice for crocheters who are new to fine summer yarns like Rainbow Lace?

โ€œBe patient! Working with thinner yarn means your project takes longer to work up.โ€

Future Stitches & Final Thoughts

What something exciting that you are itching to try next?

โ€œThis collaboration allowed me to explore gradient yarns, so thatโ€™s a win. Iโ€™d also like to explore using crochet to create everyday wear, something that pairs easily with everything else in your wardrobe.โ€

Anything you would like to add?

โ€œI want to thank the crochet community for their support. As someone who has only been crocheting for less than three years, Iโ€™ve felt super welcomed by fellow crafters. This has to be the most wholesome community Iโ€™ve been a part of.โ€
